Necco Wafers - STILL being made since 1847. Wow!

Although we here at Sweets 'N' Treats have posted incredible and exciting factoids about Necco before, here is new-to-us  triva: In the 1930’s, Admiral Byrd took 2-1/2 tons (yes – TONS) of NECCO Wafers to the South Pole, practically a pound a week for each of his men during their two-year stay in the Antarctic. (wow)

AND - yes, there IS more!

The Necco company makes about 630 million wafers annually. If all those wafers were placed edge to edge, they

would go around the world twice. Ok, we have to stop. That is A LOT of impressive candy knowledge for one day. :)

The "JUST BORN" Candy Company

The JUST BORN Candy Company - makers of delights such as  Goldenburg Peanut Chews,  Mike ‘N’ Ikes,  Hot Tamales & other items - was founded in 1923.

The company got its name when founder Sam Born displayed in his store window a sign advertising freshly-made candies, declaring them "just born".

HOT TAMALES: One of the famous confections

produced since 1950, that are the #1 sugar cinnamon candy in the U.S. Each small red candy has just 7 calories and 0 grams of fat.

MIKE 'N' IKES: Several theories exist about how this candy got its name, from a naming contest, to a 1937 song titled "Mike and Ike (The Twins)" and after a Vaudeville act "Mike and Ike, We're Just Alike".

If you lined up each piece of M & I candy

produced in one year end-to-end, they would reach around the earth 3 times! Each M & I chewy candy has only 6 calories and 0 grams of fat.

PEANUT CHEWS: Were first sold in and around Philadelphia by the Goldenberg Candy Company. They were developed during World War I and used by the U.S. Military as a high-energy ration bar enjoyed by the troops.

JUST BORN also manufactures the line of Teenee

Beanee Jelly beans - and here's a few hints about another popular item: they're fluffy...yellow...

chicken-shaped...yes, PEEPS!

Check out their website for more info - but

here's something we think is cool; they

have a PEEPS STORE at the National Harbor in Maryland (across the water from Old Town, Alexandria), just off the Beltway past the Woodrow Wilson Bridge! (No, sadly I haven't been yet, but I hear it's fun to visit).

Q. Do you

know how Junior

Mints got their

name, and the

year they were

invented?

A. They were

first made in 1949,

and were named

after the inventor's favorite stage performance,

"Junior Miss."

Candy Factoid: According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world’s largest lollipop weighed 4,759 pounds & was made during a festival in Sweden July 27, 2003.

WOW. (How can you top THAT??)

Candy Corn ~ Of the 20 million pounds of candy corn made each year, 75 percent is sold at Halloween.

It was first made by the Wunderle Candy Co. in the 1880s, then by the the Goelitz Confectionary Co. around 1898.
