These two Lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay
are a style called "screwpile" lights. They are uniquely-shaped short, wide, and multi-sided structures suitable for shallow water such as the bay area. This design enabled them to stand in the water on legs or pilings, rather than on land as most lighthouses were constructed.
The Hooper Strait light is located in Saint Michael's,
Maryland, a short drive from the Bay Bridge.
